Vanderbilt Law School, a leading law school in the United States that was established in 1874. Serves on the Board of Advisors.

Florida Council of 100, a private, non-profit, non-partisan organization of Florida’s top business leaders who advise the state’s governor. Serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors

Baptist Health South Florida Miami Cancer Institute, a next generation cancer treatment center known for its leading clinical care and research. Serves on the Board of Directors.
Ransom Everglades School, a nationally ranked, independent, non-profit, co-educational, college-preparatory day school serving grades six to twelve in Coconut Grove in Miami, Florida. Serves on the Board of Trustees.

The Orange Bowl Committee, non-profit created in 1935 with the mission of generating tourism for South Florida through an annual football game and supporting events. Served in various leadership positions, including Chairman of the Board and President (2006-2007) – he is only the second African-American to hold those positions since the Committee began in 1935. During his tenure, there were significant changes to manage and lead, some of which were expected and others of which were unexpected.

  • Early in his term, the longtime CEO received an offer to become an Athletic Director. Led the search and selection for a new CEO, gained consensus of the Board, and negotiated compensation package with the selected CEO, who continues to serve in that role 15 years later.
  • Led the acquisition of land to construct the Committee’s first owned headquarters, which remains the HQ today.
  • Led the transition from ESPN to Fox Sports as television partner.
  • Led the adoption of new governance policies related to CEO compensation, clearer lines of distinction between Board policy decisions and operational staff decisions, and put in place a decision-making framework for succession planning.
  • Selected to lead negotiations, as the principal, with the Atlantic Coast Conference, Southeastern Conference, Big 10 Conference, and Notre Dame to create the Bowl Championship Series grouping with the Capital One Orange Bowl Game.

Miami Dade College Foundation, stewards of individual and corporate donor contributions to support Miami Dade College, the largest institution of higher education in the country. Elected as a Board member and then served as Chair of the Investment Committee and ultimately Chair of the Board. During his tenure as Investment Committee Chair, he revamped investment and spending policies. During his tenure as Chair, he led the search for a new Executive Director with the candidate being selected after his tenure was over.

100 Black Men of America, an international mentoring organization whose goal is to educate and empower African-American children and teens. Served in various leadership positions, including Chairman of the Board. During Board service over the past 28 years (eight as Chairman, and 10 as a Past Chairman), he chaired committees and task forces that recommended new Chapter expansion and sustainability models, governance policies, investment strategies, fund raising approaches, and human resource policies.

Overtown Youth Center, a local institution founded in 2003 by NBA Hall-of-Famer Alonzo Mourning and real estate developer Martin Z. Margulies with the purpose of creating a safe haven for the children living in Overtown. Served as the first Chairman of the Board for 10 years. During his tenure as Chairman, put in place all of the organizational governance structure, supported the development of the operational policies and procedures, fundraised for, constructed and launched the new facility.

Leadership Florida, a statewide forum of community leaders convened to further develop leadership skills and share essential information and viewpoints. Served on the Board of Directors and Chaired Audit Committee.

Appointed Positions:

President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans, charged with strengthening the nation by improving educational outcomes for African Americans to ensure that all African Americans receive an education that prepares them for college, productive careers, and satisfying lives. Federal Judicial Nominating Commission (Southern District), panel charged with selecting finalists for presidential appointments to district judgeships, U.S. attorneys, and U.S. Marshals. [Appointed by the Hon. Bill Nelson, the Hon. Mel Martinez, the Hon. George LeMieux, the Hon. Marco Rubio, former and current United States Senators, Florida].

Miami Dade College Presidential Search Committee, the committee set up to interview candidates to serve as president of Miami Dade College, which recommended finalists to the Board of Trustees. Served on the committee’s Board of Directors.

Miami-Dade County Blue Ribbon Task Force on Ethics in Government, a task force whose recommendations led to the creation of the Miami-Dade County Commission on Ethics & Public Trust.
